Smart Beginnings Charlottesville Albemarle is a collaborative of business, education, government, health, human service and other community leaders dedicated to ensuring that all children in our community enter kindergarten ready to succeed. The initiative began in 2008 and serves the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The Smart Beginnings Leadership Council is chaired by Dr. Robert Pianta, Dean of the UVa Curry School of Education. The work of the Leadership Council includes action teams focused on:

- Workforce and Quality Child Care
Smart Beginnings actively supports transition to kindergarten activities, early kindergarten registration, enhanced community measurement of school readiness, and the local expansion of the Virginia Star Quality Initiative to promote quality child care and preschool.
